As I stumble through the endless list of new domain endings the site of my provider coincidently shows the term “security” direct under the term “sex” and “protection” in some columns after “porn”.

Only, therefore I realize that the price for “security” or “protection” is much higher than the one for “sex” or “porn”. And that’s a big surprise for me. In the early internet years, almost every online offer with direct or implied references to sex had been a license to print money. Corresponding to that fact domains with “sex” as a part of the name were nearly invaluable. The climax of this hype was an auction in 2006 where the company “DOM Partners LLC” bought the domain “sex.com” – for a reported $14 million. But now in the digital world of 2020, it looks as if fear has knocked sex off the throne as the most exploitable human drive. Back to the list of my provider: costs for “dot xxx” = 9,90 Euro per month, “dot sex” = 16 Euro per month, “dot security” = 260 Euro per month, “dot porn” = 16,50 Euro per month, “dot protection” = 260 Euro per month.

Erst dadurch wird mir klar, dass der Preis für “security” oder “protection” viel höher ist als der für “sex” oder “porn”. Und das ist für mich eine große Überraschung. In den frühen Internet-Jahren war fast jedes Online-Angebot mit direkten oder impliziten Hinweisen auf Sex wie eine Lizenz zum Gelddrucken. Dementsprechend waren Domains mit “sex” als Teil des Namens fast unbezahlbar. Der Höhepunkt dieses Hype war eine Auktion im Jahr 2006, bei der die Firma “DOM Partners LLC” die Domain “sex.com” erwarb – für gemeldete 14 Millionen Dollar. Aber jetzt, in der digitalen Welt von 2018, sieht es so aus, als ob es Angst ist, die Sex als den kommerzialisierbarsten menschlichen Trieb vom Thron gestoßen hat.
