In October 2021 it will be 25 years since my best friend and former roommate Heinz Conrads died. Although he was of inestimable value for the cultural and gastronomic Nordstadt/Eigelstein development, although he helped many people to gain a foothold in Cologne, he has barely left any visible traces – because the “Daneben” and the “Schneiderei” do not exist anymore and times of social media, digital tributes and Wikipedia came only after his death. With this post I will change this a little bit and share some of my memories: photos of the Cafe Schmitz and the Filmpalette, before they were rent and rebuild by Heinz and Claudia.

“Cafe Schmitz” and “Filmpalette” had been a section in Heinz life that did not end well. But it formed the base for his last gastronomic adventure – the hotspot “Daneben”. This part of his story and a movie about the “Daneben” can be found here.

Im Oktober 2021 ist es 25 Jahre her, dass mein bester Freund und ehemaliger Mitbewohner Heinz Conrads starb. Obwohl er von unschätzbarem Wert für die kulturelle und gastronomische Entwicklung der Nordstadt/Eigelstein war, obwohl er vielen Menschen half, in Köln Fuß zu fassen, hat er wenig offensichtliche Spuren hinterlassen – denn das “Daneben” und die “Schneiderei” gibt es nicht mehr und die Zeiten von Social Media, digitalen Tributes und Wikipedia begannen erst nach seinem Tod. Ich möchte dies ein wenig ändern und einige meiner Erinnerungen teilen, die mir kürzlich wieder in die Hände gefallen sind: Fotos des “Cafe Schmitz” und der “Filmpalette“, bevor Sie von Heinz und Claudia angemietet und umgebaut wurden, meine Reinzeichnung des Filmpalette-Logos, ein Poster für die letzte Pornofilmvorführung, den Einladungstext zur Wiedereröffnung, die Menge, Claudi und Heinz während der Eröffnung.. Das “Schmitz” und die “Filmpalette” waren ein Abschnitt in Heinz Leben, der nicht gut für ihn ausging. Aber er bildete die Grundlage für sein letztes gastronomisches Abenteuer – die In-Location “Daneben”.
