In October 2021 it will be 25 years since my best friend and former roommate Heinz Conrads died. Although he was of inestimable value for the cultural and gastronomic Nordstadt/Eigelstein development, although he helped many people to gain a foothold in Cologne, he has barely left any visible traces – because the “Daneben” and the “Schneiderei” do not exist anymore and times of social media, digital tributes and Wikipedia came only after his death. With this post I will change this a little bit and share some of my memories: photos of the vacant “Café Schmitz” before Claudia rented it; shots of Heinz renovating the “Filmpalette“.

“Cafe Schmitz” and “Filmpalette” had been sections in Heinz’s life that did not end well. But it formed the base for his last gastronomic adventure – the hotspot “Daneben”. This part of his story and a movie about the “Daneben” can be found here.

Im Oktober 2021 ist es 25 Jahre her, dass mein Freund und Mentor Heinz Conrads starb. Obwohl er von unschätzbarem Wert für die kulturelle und gastronomische Entwicklung der Nordstadt/des Eigelsteins war, obwohl er so vielen Menschen half, in Köln Fuß zu fassen, hat er für den flüchtigen Beobachter wenig offensichtliche Spuren hinterlassen. Denn das “DANEBEN” und die “Schneiderei” gibt es nicht mehr und die Zeiten von Social Media, digitalen Tributes und Wikipedia begannen erst nach Heinz’ Tod. Vielleicht kann ich das ändern und vielleicht kann ich Heinz aufwecken. Indem ich hier einige meiner Aufnahmen und privaten Erinnerungsstücke aus unserer gemeinsamen Zeit teile: sein so vielsagender Zettel an mich – Fotos vom leerstehenden “Café Schmitz“, bevor es von Claudia angemietet wurde – Fotos von Heinz bei der Sanierung der “Filmpalette” – meine Reinzeichnung des Filmpalettenlogos – ein Poster für die letzte Pornofilmvorführung – den Einladungstext zur Wiedereröffnung – Claudia und Heinz während der Party. Das “Schmitz” und die “Filmpalette” waren ein Abschnitt in Heinz’ Leben, der nicht gut für ihn ausging. Aber er bildete die Grundlage für sein letztes gastronomisches Abenteuer – die In-Location “DANEBEN”.
